MASS VIEWER version 3.13 (3/13/95) [CATWARE]
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
PURPOSE
─────────
To not have to type in TYPE filename.ext |MORE everytime I want to read a
silly little file. =) Plus a few other things.

LEGAL DOGMA
──────────────
MASS VIEWER
Written by Lewis A. Sellers 3 [The Minimalist]
Copyright (c) 1994-95. All Rights Reserved.
MASS VIEWER 3.00 and up is distributed by the author as SHAREWARE, with a 7
day trial peroid. I initially started charging for this program to help
raise funds (and local awareness) for my missing kitty cat....
MASS VIEWER is copyrighted material. You may not alter this program in any
fashion, including stripping files from the original archive to shrink the
archive's distribution size, decompiling or reverse engineering any part of
this program, or in any other way violate the copyright laws of the United
States of America.
MASS VIEWER is SHAREWARE, and therefore any personal financial profit you may
gain from it is limited as follows. You may not sell this program under any
circumstances, nor may you charge any "handling fee" for disk duplication or
transportation or transmission of any kind whatsoever greater than $4US
currency for the program alone, or $18 for a collected archive (CD-ROM) if
this program is therein included, without prior written permission from the
author. EXCEPTING: If the CD-ROM archive is A) From the x2ftp.oulu.fi site
or B) Primarily composed of feline related materials (which DO NOT advocate
animal-shelter supported mandatory euthanasia) then there is no such implied
limit as to the production/shipping fees.)
Distribution with or as Commercial material is not permitted, unless prior
written permission from the author is granted, and then only so long as all
other rights are respected, and this program and all its accessory programs
remain intact and unadulterated.
This program may reside for download on any public BBS, so long as there is
at least one free public line to said board from which non-paying members may
freely download this file intact and unadultered. Any INTERNET site or USENET
group may carry this SHAREWARE software at their discretion.
Insertion of BBS ads or flyers within this program's archive, modification or
falsification of it's comments or statements of authenticity are strictly
prohibited.
The author shall not be held responsible for any loss or damage caused by the
use of MASS VIEWER. This program is a utility HACK. Though used quite often
in-house, no guarentees can be made to it's operation "in the wild". Under
all circumstances, you use this program AT YOUR OWN RISK! Read the help
files and familiarize yourself with the functions and capabilties of this
product first.
SHAREWARE?
─────────────
Yes, this was FREEWARE up until just before version 3.xx. Now it's
SHAREWARE. (Well, CATWARE.) As to why, well...read on....
The FIND MY CAT! Fund
─────────────────────────
My cat disappeared 1/13/95. (There's a picture of him included in this
program's archive. =) His name is Yazzie (corruption of "Yahoo") and he's a
two year old male of the noisy, nosey feline variety. =)
All of the author's profits from THIS program go directly into a fund to find
his cat... Or occasionly buy new mice and string-toys for his other kitty...=)
or for his sister's young getting-fatter-by-the-minute feline (who is lonely
in her apartment now his cat buddy is gone).
To register, send $10US to:
Lewis Sellers 3
Rt 4 Box 187
Rutledge, TN 37861
You may if you want, send your internet reachable email address as well, and
you will notified whenever a major upgrade occurs... or if I find out what
happened to my cat. :(
Clarification:
This program is FULLY FUNCTIONAL software. It has not been crippled in
anyway. Why, even a couple dozen bugs (at least) are included at no extra
charge! (And are yours to keep FREE, even if you decide not to continue
using this fine product. =)
If I ever find my cat, it'll go back to plain ol' FREEWARE. This is, after
all, just a hobby project of mine my cat and I started. =)
DOS 4.0+
───────────
MASS VIEWER 3.xx was designed to run under the 6.2 version of DOS, or
better (real or emulation). It should function with DOS version 4.0 and up
though.
OS/2 WARP
────────────
Certain OS/2 friendly 'enhancements' are slowly being introduced into
MASS VIEWER. Maybe oneday a native OS/2 version might appear. This isn't
exactly scheduled as an event, though.
Windows 3.x,'95,NT
─────────────────────
Originally, I designed MV2.xx so as to REFUSE to run if it detected windows
in the environment.... But to be nice, I changed that in MV3.xx. =) It does
seem to work properly under Windows 3.1 as far as I've tested it. (Which is
not very much, granted.)
Linux/BSD (unix)
───────────────────
I might one day port a copy over to Linux or BSD, but first I have to
clean up the code a bit. Wish I had more time to work on it.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
───────────────────────
Mass Viewer requires at least an 80186 IBM compatible machine, with DOS 4.2
or better/compatible. Though efforts have been made to reduce the size,
it currently takes approximately 270ish kb of conventional memory. It does
NOT use high or XMS memory at this time. Usually this leaves about 350kb plus
or minus in most setups. It is hoped that you can find editors which can
operate under such memory conditions (ie, ones that can run under 350kb of
conventional memory and use XMS/EMS to store their text.)
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
INSTALLATION
──────────────
Normally MASS VIEWER will auto-upgrade itself, but you can force it with
the command:
V -S
This does a reset to the MASS VIEWER program. If you're having problems,
this may clear them up. Also, if you upgrade to a newer version you might
also have to do this once since the formats of the V.INI files change between
versions.
The only REQUIRED file for MASS VIEWER (currently) is V.EXE. You may
manually copy it to whichever subdirectory you keep your utility programs
in if it fails to do so. Normally this is either \DOS or \UTILITY.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Command-line Options
───────────────────────
Normally you invoke MASS VIEWER by typing in the name of the program at
the command-line prompt, such as:
C:> V
But, occasionally you might wish to use some of the arguments and options
only available as command-line parameters, described below. Note that by
default, MASS VIEWER scans your current subdirectory, but you can specify
anyone you wish as a command-line argument such as:
C:> V \NASA
...which would of course scan the NASA subdirectory on C drive.
·············································································
V [path] [file mask] [options]
EXTENSIONS
-E The -E variant allows you to type in a full filename with
wildcard such as V*.DOC or *.DOC or BUL*.*, etc.
+E This option assumes that you are supplying an the extension
(the part following the ".") typically such as TXT,DOC,ME,
etc. When +E is set you only have to type the extension,
nothing more. Ex: V DOC or V TXT. Or, if you've set a
default extension, then only the V.
!E [DEFAULT]. Looks at ALL files in the current subdirectory and
chooses for viewing those with those in the EXTENSIONS list
available via F4 or ALT-F4.
FORMAT
-F Ignore all ANSI,RTF,HLP,HTML file cues. Display everything as a
standard ASCII text file.
+F [DEFAULT]
On startup MV3.xx will mark files as being a generic text file,
ANSI,RTF,HLP, or HTML. The +F switch tell MV to only look at the
file extension to determine this.
!F More preferable, the !F switch tells MV3.xx to actually open up
each file and check if it's an ANSI,RTF,HLP or HTML type. While
much more accurate, especially for detecting ANSI graphics, this
gets rather slow if you've got several hundred files in your
subdirectory. Sometimes though, you don't have much of a choice
but to use this switch.
VGA VIDEOCARD TEXT-MODES
The following command-line options set the default video text-mode
to be used by MASS VIEWER. They require a VGA or better (compatible)
videocard to function properly.
-25 80 x 25 text character mode. The default.
-50 80 x 50. The resolution I and my cat most use. =)
Frankly, for most things it's the *optimal* text
mode you'd wish to operate in.
VESA SVGA VIDEOCARD TEXT-MODES
These text video-modes require a VESA compatible videocard, minimum,
to work. Your card must also support the specified mode. (For an
example, the machine used to edit MASS VIEWER on uses a Cirrus Logic
CD-54xx card with 1mb of memory. It can only support modes 132x25 and
132x43.)
-60 80 x 60
-13225 132 x 25
-13243 132 x 43
-13250 132 x 50
-13260 132 x 60
TEXT COLORS
Mass Viewer 3.xx and up allows you to change the color scheme the
program uses (if the minimalistic black and white one doesn't suit
your tastes.) To make these changes permanent, you of course should
end your command-line with a +S (save defaults, see below).
To set the background color, use a minus sign followed by the
appropriate color, as shown below.
-BLACK
-BLUE
-GREEN
-CYAN
-RED
-MAGENTA
-BROWN
-WHITE
To set the foreground color, use a plus sign followed by the color.
+BLACK
+BLUE
+GREEN
+CYAN
+RED
+MAGENTA
+BROWN
+WHITE
SAVE DEFAULTS
-S Changes the working parameters to the internal defaults you get
when you first unpack and install VIEW. Doing a V -S also will
clear up most problems if you upgrade to a newer version of MV
or it's defaults file (V.INI) gets trashed accidently.
+S Changes the current working parameters to whatever you have on
the command-line. For example, V DOC -E +S would tell view that
from now on to assume you're only supplying extensions, and the
default extension is .DOC.
HELP
? /? /H HELP
Brings up the on-line help screens.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
KEYS AND FUNCTIONS
──────────────────────
There are almost too many keys to bother explaining. The on-line help
(press F1 while using the program) is mostly adequate for the bulk of the
functions available in MV3.xx. But just in case you didn't happen to program
it =) or want to bug the author to death =) here's a slightly more in-depth
explainations of the key functions of MV3.xx.
NOTE! If you are in a mode with 43 lines or more, additional help and info
will appear in most screens. There's not really any reason why you can't use
the 80x50 mode as default on a VGA card afterall, or 132x43 or better on
a VESA.

The following are available in BOTH MODES·································
[F1]
On-line Help.
[F2]
Shell to DOS. Type EXIT to return to MASS VIEWER.
Note: Most BIOS don't currently support SVGA modes very well,
so it's not MY fault if all your text gets stuck at in the
center of a 132x60 SVGA screen. It's your card/BIOS.
[F3]
Debugging Info-Page. Mostly used to check the VESA/VGA videocard
status, as MASS VIEWER sees things.
[F4]
Show EXTENSION list and general operating info.
[F5] to [F12]
Execute defined-keys.
Yes, you can define a command to shell out to DOS via these keys by
pressing ALT and one of the function keys. Ideally, you'd define
several of these for different file editors, plus an audio CD
control or two.
[ALT-F5] to [ALT-F12]
Edit the definable keys.
GROUPINGS·································································
Yes. See what you get for reading the help documents? Didn't plan on these
til the 4.xx series, but added two grouping functions in 3.13: Group Delete
and Group Merge. The first is obvious. The latter compiles all files tagged
into one file. Use the spacebar to select items for the current grouping.
[SPACE]
Toggle weather the current is file is in the group or not.
[ALT-C]
Clear the list of all things tagged.
[ALT-R]
All files which have been read this session are tagged.
[CTRL-INSERT]
Gather all the tagged files into one big file.
[CTRL-DELETE]
Delete all the files that are tagged.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
VIDEO MODES
─────────────
Actually, despite the nice VESA text modes available, it's actually
preferable to run in 80x50 most of the time if you plan on doing any editing.
Why? Well, some programs out will detect you're in the 80x50 and allow you to
continue editing in it. DOS's underpowered EDIT for example. =)
Note: There is a slight noticable stutter when paging through some video
modes. This occurs because MV3.xx only keeps a 4 page buffer of text in
memory at anytime, and occasionly needs to retrieve the next fews pages from
your drive (which is, in comparison to main memory, rather slow). Why not just
buffer the entire thing in RAM then you ask? Lot's of reasons, but mainly so
you'll have enough space in memory to run most any editor from MV3.xx (or
other program) when you need it. Personally, I use three different editors,
depending on which features I need at the moment. The programmable
shell-functions allow me to switch them in and out rather quickly.
The Author and his cat prefer: V -50 +S or V -13243 +S.
Vampires might like: V -14343 -black +red +S
Macintosh advocates probably prefer: V -50 -white +black +S
ANSI Graphic Files
─────────────────────
MASS VIEWER supports the display of the poster-style ANSI graphics drawn by
the more talented artists on the various nets currently in existance.
Typically these ANSIs are drawn to be viewed in 80 column mode using the 16
foreground colors and 8 background. MV3.xx supports ANSIs up to 1000 lines
long using most standard drawing codes.
Note: When viewing ANSIs MV3.xx will allocate about 156k for a decoding
buffer to hold the image. You can save this buffer as a binary file (.BIN) by
pressing ALT-A. This is roughly equivilent to a screen save, and will allow
you to redisplay the image very quickly in your own programs if you don't want
to bother with writing an ANSI decoder yourself.
Further clarification: The entire 156k buffer is not saved, just as many
lines of 160 bytes as there are lines in the ANSI.
RTF/HLP/HTML
──────────────
Jouni Mitterunen, of the famous x2ftp.oulu.fi:/pub/msdos/programming
internet FTPsite located in Oulu, Finland was muttering about needing a
rich-field text format reader one day in the r.p.g newsgroup. I casually
mentioned something to the effect of "that would be nice" and....
Currently MV properly decodes most ASCII and ANSI documents. Someday soon,
however, if I ever get ahold of all the HLP format specs, I plan to write
a version of MASS VIEWER than all will read RTF, HTML and HLP formats. Two
switchable modes will be available: (-G) text mode and (+G) VESA-compliant
graphics mode.
Someone code ISGIFF-Y and I'll work on this, ok?

Hey Andrew! =) FIND MY CAT!
THE MINIMALIST GROUP
────────────────────────
As far as public utility programs go, this is the only one currently
available from The Minimalist Group (though there are commerical and
private apps we're working on). However, there is one small program called
HOLISTIC CAT-ALOGUE I'm alphaing on for the managment of floppies. Most
catalogers are ridiculously hard to use. If you can stick a floppy in the
drive you can use HOLISTIC, though. It may be released as SHAREWARE sometime
in April or May '95.
Adopt a cat... NOW!
But keepth thine eyes off of thy neighbors cat, or else!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
CHANGES IN VERSIONS
──────────────────────
Version 3.00 to 3.01:
·Rewrote several bits of code, including the sort routines. They can complete
the same operation in about 3/8ths the time it previously took. (According
to rough timings...) Also added a routine to sort on the number of keywords
found in each file. Useful when doing a lot of keyword searches with a
large amount of files.
·The keyword routines are more pleasant to work with and look at now.
Version 3.02:
·Clean up of code, help documents and minor asthetic bugs.
·Fixed a MAJOR bug with the uuencoding routines. They should all work now.
Sorry. =)
Version 3.03: (March 10 1995)
·Increased buffer to 4 pages and rewrote the display routine. Smoother.
Motion-blur almost eliminated.
·Fixed some small bugs... made installing a bit friendlier.
·Added 'S', tab to spaces converter.
·Find my cat yet????? Well, why not!!!
Version 3.04: (March 11 1995) (Never released to public)
·Added 'I', removes "standard" internet headers from files.
·Yes...You can press SPACE and tag things now. It has to do with a grouping
function soon to be implemented about the time of the HLP/RTF/HTML code.
HLP will come first.
Version 3.13y: (March 13 1995 - Two Months....Yazzie?)
·There was a brief 3.13p pre-release version to test VGA cards and a local
upload of a 3.13 for other testing, but 3.13y is the OFFICIAL last
version of the 3.xx series.
·Converted pictures to JPEG. (almost added "Yazzie reminder" image that
pokes it's head up every 13th day. Wait til 4.xx.)
·Went to back to 3 page buffer, but made it smarter (less jumpy).
·Fixed long standing (suspected) bug with VGA cards after
karl.springer@greatesc.com (California,USA) pointed out the problem.
·ALL of the code underwent scrutiny and was cleaned up. Several new options
were added. As a result of this the zipfile size came down from 182k
to around 80k in 3.13y and the in-memory size shrank as well.
Hopefully, the entire program is more stable. However, 3.13y is being
released AS IS because of other upcoming and present demands on my time.
May it fare well out in the wild world that is.
·This is the LAST of the 3.xx series.
--min (3/27/95)
FIND MY CAT!!
FUTURE UPGRADES
───────────────────
There is a general assumption that sometime in the future, perhaps within a
few months, after 3.13y has toured the world on major a shakedown cruise,
that there will be one more major upgrade, the features of which will
probably include:
· The addition of a few other (programmable) grouping functions.
· Full graphic VESA supported viewing capability of RTF, HTML, and HLP files.
Also full TEXT-ONLY 512 character set VGA display of these files!
This will occur in the 4.xx version. Of course, if you FIND MY CAT,
I'll write the code JUST FOR YOU by the end of next week. :) :) Deal?
I'm serious about that....
(btw...if you have full windows HLP specs, email me the location sometime
up until 5/13/95 or so)
· A *decent* companion DOS editor that can use all of your machine's memory
(XMS) for editing files, but uses very little conventional memory. =)
It's called Y, in honor of my poor lost kitty. :(
· Other things... =) Possibly an integrated ISGIFF graphics viewer...
· Smaller program size! That would be nice. As I rule of thumb two MASS
VIEWERs should fit in memory at once. My goal is to optimize for three
once the HLP/RTF/HTML upgrade is smoothed in. Ug. Having trouble just
getting two to run at once though at the moment.... :(
And as tired as I am right now, well, sorry if I didn't get the code
compact enough to run the program you were wanting. Like I said,
I'm tired and I miss my cat.

Find a nice crunchy bug? Email them to me at my permanent internet address
lsellers@brbbs.com and I'll save them for my cat. =)
Suggestions? Email me. Maybe I'll include it in the next upgrade.
UUENCODE/PKZIP
──────────────────
Viewer will use your copies of PKZIP and UUENCODE/UUDECODE if they are in
your PATH (or current subdirectory). These program do NOT come with MASS
VIEWER! You must obtain them yourself, but they are so widely used that
there should be little if any difficulty in doing so. PKZIP, from PKWARE,INC,
is the preemminate compression utility used on the MS-DOS platform and a
shareware version usable by the private citizen is probably available on
almost all BBSes you may encounter.
The UUENCODE/UUDECODE programs by R.E.M. might be slightly more difficult
to find, but still, most any BBS with some kind of internet feed or hook-up
to a large network would mostly probably have a copy for download. Both
programs have nothing to do with MASS VIEWER, save that, if you have them,
it will make use of them for you. Isn't that nice of it? =)
As far as I know both the 5.25 and 5.32 version should work with MV.
